A Haskalah story: Kant and Maimon on rational faith

In 1789 Salomon Maimon sent Kant, via Markus Herz, the manuscript of his Essay on Transcendental Philosophy (Kant, 1999, pp. 291-294). A surprised Kant replied to Herz: “None my critics understood me as well Herr does” 311-315). Kant’s praise makes him a singular figure in Haskalah , Jewish Enlightenment. But while theoretical aspect Maimon’s criticism has received increasing attention recent years, its practical implications remain under-examined. what follows, I use notion rational faith for purposes tentative reconstruction reading transcendental philosophy that brings together and aspects thought both philosophers. shared project devising form would express rather than religious-based morality. argued moral freedom is vouched by an infinite intellect cannot be attributed humans but more appropriately God.
